November 2023 is a busy month for Rewire TMS clinics! We are moving two of our clinics, I am presenting on TMS at the Psychiatry Congress (SASOP) and funders are starting to come on board.
Rewire Poortview is now moving to Cat’s Corner, Roodepoort.
More and more evidence is coming that TMS’s efficacy can be enhanced by “state-dependent” parameters. Sleep, rest, wakefulness, attention, learning, memory and other cognitive functions that patients may engage in during brain stimulation have all been shown to qualitatively and quantitatively affect the stimulation-related changes observed in the brain.
Research is still being done on protocols to best “prime” the brain for TMS. But rather than wait, we at Rewire TMS Clinics decided to put effort into creating a peaceful lounge where patients could relax, have a coffee, and even a snooze.
That’s why we wanted to move to larger, airier premises.
Our TMS lounge is only for patients in treatment and has recliners, Wi-Fi, coffee and cold water. It is a tranquil space to promote healing.
Rewire Tygervalley is moving to Claro Clinic.
Claro Clinic is the Lifepath sister of Tygervalley Clinic. Claro Clinic has an ECT machine. Rewire has partnered with Lifepath to create a unit where Interventional Psychiatry can be offered. Patients will be assessed and suggested ECT or TMS or Ketamine, as appropriate.
South African Society of Psychiatry (SASOP) congress
The SASOP congresses happen every two years in different parts of the country. They are always vibrant, with exciting local and international speakers.
This year, TMS has two slots: a neuromodulation workshop and a talk on TMS for personality disorders.
As local psychiatrists educate themselves on the possibilities of TMS, patients can make more informed choices.
Funders start to see the value of TMS.
TMS is safe and effective. After rigorous review, specific funders are now approving TMS under certain conditions. I am convinced that as they see their clients reap the benefits of treatment, more and more will come on board.
